Step 1: Governing Document
You will need to be a properly formed group. That means that you will need to have what is known as a governing document or a constitution. (Need any help to do this? Click here).
Step 2: Identify the Need
Have you identified that there is a need for volunteers. ie is there a Task Description to recruit for. Have you thought about volunteer expenses and training. (If you need support to draw up the Task Description or advice on expenses contact Janice Ferris. HVA also runs a number of Volunteer Management training sessions including Setting up a Volunteer-Run Programme. See below)
Step 3: Resources
You will need to establish if there are resources in both time (eg volunteer supervision) and space to host the volunteers. HVA runs a number of volunteer management courses to provide support to volunteer coordinators (see below).
Step 4: Policies
You will need to have certain policies in place before you begin to recruit volunteers including: Health & Safety Policy, Volunteering Policy and Equal Opportunities. (See below for training on Writing a Volunteer Policy. For support on Health & Safety policy and other policies click here)
Step 5: Recruitment
Ok, are you ready to start recruiting volunteers? Then complete a HVA Membership Form and Organisation Registration Form. (click here for more details)
Volunteer Management Training
HVA runs a number of courses for Volunteer Management including: Writing a Volunteer Policy, Recruiting Volunteers, Supporting and Supervising Volunteers, Motivating and Retaining Volunteers and Setting up a Volunteer-Run Programme. All the above courses are run by the HVA Volunteer Team and so they will be available for additional questions and support. HVA also runs a number of other Volunteer courses from time to time.
