Voluntary Sector Hub Consultation
“Homeless, over-crowded, inadequately housed, unable to afford suitable premises” … voluntary sector organisations are more than often working in the above conditions whilst trying to offer much needed services to people of Hackney.
One of the major cross-cutting themes that appeared in all workshops and consultations carried out with the voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations is the premises. Lack of a Premises strategy is not only a major gap, it is also identified and recognised as a major barrier to VCS sector potential being achieved.
What is our Council doing about the VCS premises issue? On 12 May 2005 at the “Fresh Start “ Conference, Bryn Harries, Assistant Chief Executive, Property Directorate, LBH announced the beginning of a premises consultation process with the VCS. The first consultation on general lettings was held on 15 June and it was well attended. The second consultation was scheduled for 15 July 2005 and unfortunately, due to a low response the consultation was cancelled.
Peter Edwards, Strategy Manager for Property Services Directorate, LBH confirmed that further date will be announced later this summer with the view of consultation taking place in September. The September consultation will focus on the pilot hub proposal, which will look into co-locating a number of voluntary groups under one roof and it will also confirm location for the pilot. Property Services Directorate is leading on the accommodation aspects of the premises in the local compact.
What are we as a sector doing about the issue? VCS premises issue is on our local compact agenda and on our local ChangeUp agenda as a standing item. We as the sector will continue to address the issue and respond both collectively and individually and we will continue to participate pro-actively in any consultations until the matter is resolved accordingly.
