Hackney Youth Awards 2008

Young people from Hackney got the chance to shout about their achievements at the glittering annual Hackney Youth Awards. The Town Hall Assembly Rooms were buzzing as Radio 1 DJ Trevor Nelson, who hails from Dalston, made an inspiring speech about achieving in society and gave out the honours.

Presentations were made in a range of categories including special contributions to youth projects, making positive life choices and improving community cohesion.

But the quality of this year's nominations was so outstanding, organisers also gave out a number of special mentions to those who did not receive a main award. Entertainment was provided by local dance groups Notorious and Nemesis, the Hoxton Hall Band, singer Jessica McKenzie, and MC Strikes + Eikes.

The event, organised by Hackney Voluntary Action and Rising Tide, was overseen by the Council's youth service.

Cllr Rita Krishna, Cabinet Member Children Services, said: "The young award recipients are all deserving of recognition. They have shown dedication and maturity through their community involvement and I hope they can inspire other young people in Hackney to engage more with their local communities."
